Black, Paul D. Saginaw, Michigan Our loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and dear friend passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 10, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was 81 years old. Paul D. Black was born on April 9, 1942, in Alpena, Michigan, to the late Sebert and Harriet (O’Toole-Zirkle) Black. Paul graduated from Alpena High School in 1960. He married his high school sweetheart, Bonnie Jean Byers, on June 10, 1961, celebrating 62 wonderful years together. Shortly after his high school graduation, he enlisted with the United States Army. Following boot camp, he was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He later moved to Fort Riley, Kansas, with the 1st Infantry Big Red One. While on maneuvers for Fort Riley, Paul taught at West Point. Paul was also assigned to the Airborne Division 8th Army in Bad Krueznach, Germany. While serving in Germany, he was selected to participate with the German Paratroopers Unit. Paul ended his active military career with the 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. He proudly served with the United States Army for eight years and then continued his service with the Army National Guard as SFC for an additional 12 years. When Paul returned to Michigan in 1967, he served the Saginaw community as a Patrol Officer, also known for “walking the beat” for the City of Saginaw, retiring as Sergeant in 1994. Smith, Emma J. Saginaw, Michigan Loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt passed away with her family by her side on Wednesday, October 26, 2022 at her residence. She was 85 years old. Emma Jean Pryor was born on January 25, 1937 in Saginaw, Michigan to the late Alfred and Ella (Thomas) Pryor. She married Gerald Raymond Smith on March 20, 1959. He preceded her in death on May 5, 2017. Emma was employed by Lufkin Rule and was a member of TOPS for many years. Emma loved camping, fishing, and traveling. She also enjoyed working on puzzles. But, what Emma really loved most was spending time with her family around a bonfire. Surviving are her children, Gerald Jr. (Brenda) Smith, Michael Smith, Timothy (Kathy) Smith, and Kellie (Charles) Bell; grandchildren, Gerald R. Smith III, Kassie (Shane) Bauer, Kayme (Rick) Napora, Kyle Smith, Tabyas Smith and Jessica Bell; 15 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and extended family. Andrew Thomas Chasnis, beloved father, brother, and friend, passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at his home. He was born April 26, 1962 in Saginaw, son of the late John J. and Mary Louise (Collison) Chasnis. Andy graduated from Arthur Hill High School and went on to attend Lake Superior State College. He returned home to Saginaw where he finished his Associate’s Degree at Delta College. Andy began his career working with Saginaw County for over 20 years. He then worked maintenance for property management until his health no longer permitted. Andy enjoyed many things in life but nothing gave him greater joy than being a dad. His son Patrick was his best friend and gave him a greater purpose in life. The two spent as much time as possible at their property in the woods where Andy had built a cabin. They enjoyed hunting, fishing, and cooking together, as well as working on classic cars. The unconditional love Andy had for his son was immeasurable. Andy thrived on helping others and his generosity extended to family and friends. He had the kindest and most gentle heart. Andy had a larger than life personality with a sense of humor to match. To know him was to love him and many people did. We all lost a small piece of ourselves when we lost Andy. He was 60 years old. Reynaldo J. Rodriguez was born on March 19, 1956 in Saginaw, Michigan to the late Refugio and Delfina (Jimenez) Rodriguez. Above all, Reynaldo loved and cherished his family, especially his son, grandchildren, sisters, and many extended family members and friends. Abelina Huerta Our beloved mother passed away peacefully on February 15, 2024, in Warren, Michigan. Mother lived to 100 years of age. We were so fortunate to have her in our lives for so long. Abelina was born on March 24, 1923, in San Benito, Texas, the daughter of Teodoro and Gregoria (Villareal) DeLeon. She was married to Raul Huerta who preceded her in death on December 6, 2018. Mother lived in California for several years. She was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Mother loved the outdoors and nature. She often said that Carmel, California was her paradise. She hiked the trails of Yosemite National Park and Lake Tahoe. Mother loved to garden and plant flowers. Mother was loved by so many people. Most of all she loved her children, (20) grandchildren & (20) great- grandchildren and (5) great-great grandchildren. Gempel, Jason Saginaw, Michigan Jason Gempel, loving spouse, father, and dear friend tragically passed away on Saturday, October 28, 2023 from injuries sustained in an accident. He was 51 years old. Jason was known to always show for those who needed him at any time of day or night. To meet him was to feel like you’ve known him your entire life. His laughter, kindness, and loyalty were truly one of a kind. He was the friend and companion you wanted to have, and simultaneously the friend and companion you’d someday hope to be. Jason found so much joy in life, particularly in fishing, racing his cars and snowmobiles, hunting, playing with his puppies Solomon and Clarke, and rocking out to some good live music. His true, happiest place was when he was with the love of his life of 20 years, Heidi. They enjoyed their nightly fishing trips, traveling to see their favorite bands, especially Soulfly, and enjoying a good spicy Bloody Mary at the end of a long work day. He loved spending time with his closest friends and family, and his dogs who he always considered family. He was incredibly skilled in seemingly every way, and was proud to have owned and operated his own business that he built.
