What do the IXL Real-Time Diagnostic levels mean? ›

A student's diagnostic level represents their working grade level. So a level of 400 represents a readiness to start working on 4th-grade skills, and a level of 450 means the student is about halfway through the 4th-grade curriculum.

Grade level guide: 100 = 1st grade, 200 = 2nd grade, 300 = 3rd grade, 400 - 4th grade, 500 = 5th grade, 600 = 6th grade, 700 = 7th grade, 800 = 8th grade, and 900 = 9th grade. By clicking on the IXL image above or the word IXL, students will be forwarded to the log in page.

As always, a diagnostic level indicates a student's working grade level—for example, a level of 800 indicates readiness to work on eighth grade level skills. When the numbers appear as a range, this means that the Diagnostic is still narrowing down the student's exact learning level.

An IXL Diagnostic level of 500 represents readiness to begin working on fifth-grade level skills.

Third grade is displayed as Level E.

These levels range from 0-1300, with 0-50 representing pre-K, 50-100 kindergarten, and 1300 representing the end of 12th grade. When students have completed their diagnostic, they can also check their own levels by visiting the Assessment tab. Page 5.

For example, a score of 650 indicates that the student has acquired about 50% of 6th-grade material, whereas a score of 700 indicates that the student is ready to learn 7th-grade material.

If a student's number is 550, it indicates the student is halfway through the grade-five level. A 750 indicates the student is halfway through the grade-seven level.

IXL Diagnostic scores are scaled such that scores correspond to grade levels. For example, a score of 350 indicates that the student has acquired about 50% of third-grade material, whereas a score of 400 indicates that the student is ready to learn fourth-grade material.

How accurate is the IXL diagnostic? ›

Researchers found that the IXL Real-Time Diagnostic demonstrates high reliability as a measure of math and ELA achievement. Additionally, IXL's diagnostic is a good predictor of performance (using ILEARN as a criterion measure), with a correlation of . 90 in math and . 86 in ELA.

Independent research from Johns Hopkins University has verified that IXL meets the ESSA Tier 1 standards for evidence-based efficacy.

After detecting inactivity for a certain amount of time, the timer pauses. It resumes when the student starts practicing again. Depending on your student's grade level, it will take two, four, or six minutes of inactivity for the timer to pause.

For ELA (n = 1,681), the average IXL Diagnostic score was 597.22 (SD = 248.34), with 1,007 (60%) students performing at or above grade level. In terms of PSSA performance, the average 2022 math PSSA scale score was 977.27 (SD = 112.53), with 648 (38%) students reaching proficiency.
