Should I put a bag in my cat's litter box? ›

Avoid putting a plastic bag at the bottom of your litter box. While this is very convenient for the human cleaning it, it is less convenient for the cat, which doesn't like the feeling of his claws getting caught in the bag when scratching his litter box to bury his waste.

Simply lay the bag in the base of your cat's litter tray, fold around the edges of the tray and fill with litter. To clean the tray, all you need to do is remove the bag and throw it away – easy! This helps to ensure that your cat's litter tray stays clean and fresh!

Clean the litter box

Pour a few inches of hot water into the empty litter box and let it soak for a few minutes. Stirring in some unscented dish soap will help to loosen any lingering litter or waste from the box, making it much easier to scour away any problem spots with a scrub brush, sponge, or paper towels.

In this study, no overall preference was seen for covered versus uncovered litter boxes. When individual cats were assessed, 70% showed absolutely no preference (i.e. used both boxes equally), 15% used the covered litter box more significantly, while 15% used the uncovered more than the covered. Most cats and humans prefer a clumping cat litter. Humans like it because the urine clumps into scoopable masses that they can remove easily when cleaning. Cats like it because no urine or strong odor is left behind after scooping.

Litter box liners seem like an excellent, convenient idea for humans, but cats can dislike them. Liners that don't fit properly bunch up, trapping urine and making it smelly. Claws can poke holes, letting urine seep through to the tray.
