Is it hard to get a girls soccer scholarship? ›

Full ride soccer scholarships are often spoken about but earning a full scholarship is rare especially as a freshman student athlete. Only certain schools and college divisions (NCAA schools and NAIA schools) offer athletic scholarships and those that do are limited.

Women's teams are currently allocated 14 scholarships to fill out their rosters. By adding a men's soccer team, LSU would have to take a current men's sport away or add a women's sport to comply with Title IX.

Join a recreational league.

It is important to play some soccer yourself, as this will further your understanding of the game and feel for the sport. Dribble the ball around in the grass, bounce it off walls, learn to juggle with your knees. True love of the game makes you a passionate soccer fan.

If you want to play soccer at the Division 1 level, know that they are the most competitive, and each school scrutinizes the athletic and academic performance of potential recipients. Each year, schools award 9.9 scholarships to men's Division I soccer programs and 14 scholarships to Division I women's programs.

The process for NCAA women's soccer recruiting is very competitive, and many families are unsure how to go about getting recruited. In fact, only about 9.6% of high school women's soccer players go on to play in college, and only about 2.3% go on to play for a Division 1 school.

Considering 57 percent of Georgia's student body is made up of women and the fact that the football team alone doles out 85 scholarships, enough for two or three teams in other sports, there isn't any wiggle room to add another men's program without adding another women's program as well.

The main obstacle for adding men's soccer programs is Title IX, which in part says there have to be as many scholarships for female athletes as there are for male athletes. Rice and UH this week both said the reason they sponsor women's teams but not men's teams is because of Title IX.

The biggest reasons there is not a men's soccer team at the school is the SEC itself and the finances of adding another non-revenue sport. While all 14 SEC schools have women's soccer teams, only two — Kentucky and South Carolina --— have men's teams.

While there are no scholarships for "athletics", Division-III schools reserve plenty of academic, leadership, and various special needs scholarships to athletes. If you are a good athlete with good grades and above average SAT/ACT scores, you could earn near full-tuition scholarships while you play sports.

Transferring between divisions

If you're transferring from a D3 school to a D2 or D1 school, you must register with the NCAA Eligibility Center. You don't need to contact the NCAA Eligibility Center if transferring to another D3 school. All you need to do is fill out the NCAA Self-Release form.
