Since there is almost constant daylight during Alaska’s summers, crops grow much larger then usual. It is here where the world’s largest carrot (19 lbs), rutabaga (76 lb), and cabbage (106 lb) was grown. The fishing and seafood industry is the state’s largest private industry employer. Alaska plays an important role in America’s seafood providing most of the country’s salmon, crab, halibut, and herring. Despite being the largest state, there are fewer then 1 million acres being farmed with about 900 farms. Most of Alaska’s farms are dairies or poultry ranches. Alaska’s most valuable farm commodities are dairy products, potatoes, cattle, and eggs.
