You may have heard about the job through someone who works there, such as a friend or family member. Share this, as the interviewer may see them as a trustworthy source. The hiring manager may then ask this connection about your previous roles, passions and commitment to gain a second opinion on you as an employee.

Provide a Brief Highlight-Summary of Your Experience

The best way to answer "Tell me about yourself" is with a brief highlight-summary of your experience, your education, the value you bring to an employer, and the reason you're looking forward to learning more about this next job and the opportunity to work with them.

When answering this question, try to prove that you're the right candidate for the job by sharing what you know about the company. Show excitement about the job opening, be honest (if honesty won't hurt your chances of getting a job), and briefly elaborate on your answer.

Look for information that relates to the position you applied for, the company's mission, vision, values, culture, goals, achievements, challenges, and competitors. Make notes of the facts, figures, and stories that stand out to you and align with your own skills, experience, and aspirations.

Don't use vague or contradictory language to try to sound smarter or clever. People appreciate sincerity, so give them a genuine response that shows them that you care and that you understand them. Make sure they're paying attention to you so you don't have to repeat yourself.

If someone asks you, “Can you hear me?” say “I can hear you just fine.” If they ask a personal question, ask them why they want to know.
