As Christians, we believe that all of life is sacred, that everything belongs to God, and that we are called to steward what He has entrusted to us wisely. This includes our money. When we invest, we are essentially putting our money to work for us in order to grow it over time. But what does it mean to invest from a Christian worldview?

Principles for Christian Investing

There are a few key principles that can guide us in our investing decisions.

  1. First, we should seek to invest in companies that are aligned with our values (Biblically Responsible Investing). Biblically Responsible Investing is the practice of avoiding investing in companies whose primary purpose is to promote or profit from activities which are explicitly sinful. We also call those ‘sin stocks.’ Since God determines what is good and what is sinful, we should not invest in anything that profits from sinful activities.
  2. Second, we should seek to invest in companies that are good stewards of their resources. This means looking for companies that are wise with how they handle their finances and employees. These companies promote growth within their businesses and encourage people and products to thrive.
  3. Finally, we should seek to invest in companies that are making the world a better place. Not only should we avoid sin stocks, we should promote investments that are practically meeting the needs of those around us. For example, companies that are investing in clean water efforts, or other efforts that promote human flourishing, are great places to start looking! See Stewardology’s episode with Eventide Asset Management for more on this.

When we invest from a Christian worldview, we are not only growing the assets entrusted to us, but we are also making a difference in the world. We are using our resources to support companies that are aligned with our values and making a positive impact. Biblically Responsible Investing is a very practical way for Christians to live out their faith in the realm of finances, and thereby glorify God with what He has entrusted to us.

Applications for Christian Investing

  • Do your research. Before you invest in any company, take the time to do your research. Learn about the company’s values, products or services, its financial health, and its management team.
  • Consider your values & responsibility. The first thing to keep in mind is that God expects you to grow in your personal holiness and obedience to His Word and will. You are not responsible for the sinful acts of others. However, you can decide where you put your investments. Not all BRI models are “squeaky clean,” but it is possible to limit sin stocks in your portfolio.
  • Seek professional advice. If you’re not sure how to invest from a Christian worldview, consider seeking professional advice from a financial advisor. We can help you develop an investment strategy that aligns with your values and your financial goals.

Investing from a Christian worldview can be a great way to use your money to glorify God and to make a difference in the world. By following these tips, you can make wise investment decisions that will help you grow your money and live out your faith.
